Luke's Coaching Pt. 2
I made a self post yesterday because I saw some obvious flaws in his coaching that no one was talking about. This game was a bad show by our players, but the coaching made it significantly worse.
Brandon Ingram playing PG
I applaud starting Ingram at PG. Traditionally, it would be considered a risky move, but it was worth trying. BI has had success running point against opposing benches and seeing if his offense translates in a starting role is something the Lakers have to test. But we didn't test it in this game. Instead we saw BI and Randle awkwardly take turns running point while the other was out of position because he wasn't sure whose turn it was to handle the ball.
PG defense
Ever since summer league Ingram running point has been intriguing. What hasn't intrigued me is Ingram's defense on point guards. Why didn't the team's defensive strategy account for Williams going into the game? With Ingram playing point this seems like an obvious hole that should have been addressed beforehand. Instead it wasn't addressed until Ingram got pulled 5 minutes into the game after a few possessions in a row of Deron Williams outplaying BI. And what was Luke's defensive solution? Jose Calderon. This is frustrating because Clarkson was sitting on the bench and easily would have been a better solution.
Veteran Defense
There were multiple plays in the first half where Lou Williams was completely lost on defense. For example he was standing 10 feet away from Wesley Mathews on 2 of his threes, for no reason. He wasn't helping, he wasn't playing a passing lane, he wasn't doing anything. Luke has pulled Russell and Ingram for much less. Why is Lou Williams, a veteran, being allowed to make big mistakes? While young players, who should be allowed to make mistakes, are on a tighter leash.
Lou Williams was the obvious example this game, but Nick Young, Deng, and Calderon have all held the torch for the uneven treatment in earlier games.
